Special Features of the Degree Progam
The Pre-Semester:
A special feature of the study program is the early start through the Pre-Semester, i.e. a study preparation course, which usually takes place from August to September. During this time, the subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English are taught at the level of the German Abitur. At the end of the course, an external assessment exam will be conducted to determine the suitability of international applicants for studying Mechanical Engineering at KIT.
Applicants who are not directly admitted to KIT must pass the assessment test. It is strongly recommended that these applicants attend the Pre-Semester to improve their chances of passing the test. Applicants with direct admission may also attend the Pre-Semester courses to refresh their knowledge in the above-mentioned subjects. Information on the admission status (direct or indirect admission) will be provided in the KIT Admission Letter after the application process has been completed.
To register for the Pre-Semester, please contact the Carl Benz School of Engineering (CBS), which is responsible for the organizational process. Participation in the Pre-Semester is independent of membership in the College Program.

Information about the Study Preparation CourseThe College-Program:
The degree program is characterized by a cooperation between KIT and the Carl Benz School of Engineering (CBS). The latter offers international students extensive support and academic guidance through a study-related support program. Details on the content can be found in the description of the so-called College Program. Participation in the program is optional.

Information about all services offered by CBSExplore numerous KIT resources and make the most of your studies!
At university level:
- German Courses at the Studienkolleg: International students should focus on learning German alongside their studies. Good language skills facilitate integration, foster friendships, and make everyday tasks easier. In particular, good German skills significantly improve career prospects on the German job market. The Studienkolleg at KIT offers language courses at all levels. One course can be attended free of charge per semester, and one German course can be recognized with 2 ECTS credits as academic achievement.
- International Studies in Mechanical Engineering (ISIM): ISIM is the point of contact for all questions relating to opportunities for studying abroad and exchange programs during your studies.
- Career Service: The Career Service supports students in their search for internships and provides tips on preparing application documents.
- Interdisciplinary Training: KIT offers numerous opportunities to acquire soft skills. The House of Competence (HoC) and ZAK offer courses that promote interdisciplinary skills, independence, and personal development.
At student level:
- University Student Groups: At KIT there are a variety of university groups in which you can get involved during your studies. The aim is personal and professional development and the creation of new networks. If you are interested in motorsport and automotive engineering, KA-RaceIng is a great option to consider.
- Student Council (Fachschaft): In the student council, students from the department help with questions about studying, organize events and sell past exams papers. This makes them a valuable point of contact for other students. Since the student council consists entirely of volunteers, they are always happy to welcome new students who are interested to get involved and work with them.
Interesting annual KIT events:
- Day of Mechanical Engineering: On Day of Mechanical Engineering, students can learn about the opportunities for collaboration with institutes and industry companies, including internships, bachelor’s or master’s theses, doctoral projects, or starting a career. The event is complemented by a series of lectures on the career profile of a mechanical engineer.
- KIT Career Fair: The KIT Career Fair takes place once a year and offers students the opportunity to establish direct contacts with companies, whether as potential interns, trainees, or young professionals.
